The new album

Johnny

Michael Cretu Trio

Piano · Double bass · Drums

A jazz trio record dedicated to Johnny Răducanu — Michael’s uncle and mentor, and one of the most important figures in Romanian jazz. Piano, double bass and drums, recorded at the University of Salford.

Michael Cretu

Composer, solo double bassist, and musical director.

Born in Bucharest, trained at George Enescu Music School and the Royal Northern College of Music, Michael Cretu writes and performs from a family line of musicians that reaches back to the eighteenth century. He lives and works in Manchester.

His music moves between contemporary classical writing, jazz, and the folk traditions of Eastern Europe — a shop window for the work as it stands now, with a new trio recording already in production.

Michael Cretu’s unique combination of skills and experience as a double bass player result in a fascinating and unclassifiable musical blend. Always approachable, his music sits between contemporary classical, jazz, and Balkan folk music, and is played with an emotional immediacy which communicates with audiences in a direct and unforgettable way.
